Irene Salivin (known to most people as Mrs Salivin) was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine in 1926. She went to primary and secondary school in Donetsk until 1941 when she was in a workers' camp in Germany as a displaced person. She completed her secondary education in Germany in 1946 and was a student at the University of Frankfurt from 1946 to 1948.

Salivin arrived in Australia in May 1949 on the <span style="font-style:italic">Wooster Victory</span> and spent two years in the Migrant Camp at Broadmeadows. In February 1952 she was appointed as a Technical Assistant in the Microanalytical Laboratory of the CSIRO Division of Industrial Chemistry. The Organisation clearly thought that she had the skills to do this work but did insist on her enrolling in the Diploma in Applied Chemistry at the Melbourne Technical College (now RMIT University).

Salivin was married but, despite CSIRO policy precluding the employment of married women, was nevertheless given an indefinite appointment. She resigned from the Organisation in May 1956 when she was expecting a child. In January 1957 she was ready to return to the Division and was informed by the Chief, Dr Wark, that 'I am happy to inform you that the Executive have decided that in your case it will not be necessary for you to go through the normal course of making re-application for appointment by this organisation and that we should be glad if you would present yourself for duty on (February 4th ,1957)'. She remained in the Organisation until she retired in 1987.
