He was responsible for the development of the Loy Yang Mine. He had a lifelong interest in engineering history. After he retired as Manager of the Yallourn Production Centre in 1987, he was commissioned to write a number of comprehensive technical histories of the SECV operations in the LaTrobe Valley for the SECV, and a definitive history of coal mining in Victoria for the Heritage Council of Victoria. His significant contributions to engineering were recognised when he was awarded the Sir Willis Connolly Medal by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in 2000, and a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2005. Work on the Loy Yang Mine History commenced in May 1994 under the auspices of the then State-owned enterprise, Generation Victoria (VA 4078). Following the disaggregation of Generation Victoria on 1 February 1995, responsibility for the writing of the Loy Yang Mine History was transferred to the State-owned Corporation, Loy Yang Power Pty Ltd. This corporation was later privatised on 14 May 1997. An undertaking was made by the State Electricity Commissioner of Victoria (SECV) Office of the Administrator (VA 4086) following the privatisation of Loy Yang Power Pty Ltd to complete the Loy Yang Mine History. All materials relating to the preparation of the publication were transferred to the SECV Office of the Administrator (VA 4086) on the understanding that the material was to remain intact as a basis for future research. This series consists of drafts and associated research materials such as books, manuals, reports, photographs, drawings and statistical information. The book was published in June 2000 and joined other publications by J A Vines on the brown coal mining activities of the SECV such as: - "A Technical History of the Yallourn Open Cut to December 1987", "A Technical History of Yallourn North and Yallourn North Extension Open Cuts to 1988", "Train Systems - Yallourn and Morwell Open Cuts" and "A History of Morwell Open Cut to June 1995".
