It's origins lay in informal meetings in Queensland from 1948 from which the Australian Association of Clinical Pathologists emerged. At the inaugural meeting of the College in Melbourne there were 70 founding members. The Board of Censors was established in 1958 to deal with examinations for College membership. In 1967 it was decided to publish a scientific journal,Pathology. Having been granted its royal warrant, the College became the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia in 1970.

Pathology (ISBN 0031-3025) vol. 1 (1969) - vol. 3 (1972). Subsequent volumes were published by the College's successors.
