Arthur Rothera was a biochemist highly-respected for his research in Britain and Australia. After receiving his degree from the University of Cambridge he studied at the Kaiser-Wilhlems-Universität, Strasbourg, before returning to the United Kingdom. His early research was on the amino acid cyctine, and on the sodium nitro-prusside reaction for acetone, one outcome of which was Rothera's Test used for many years by clinicians in testing for diabetes. In 1906 Rothera was appointed Lecturer in Biochemistry at the University of Melbourne, the first such appointment at any Australian university. As lecturer he was required to teach in both the Physiology and Agriculture schools. His research interests encompassed the chemistry and physiology of milk, water purification on farms, and the poisonous principle of pituri. He made contacts broadly across the University and was active in expanding his department. Although appointed to the University's Appointments Board in 1914, he never served because the Board did not sit until after his death. Rothera enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in September 1915, but died within weeks before embarkation.
