<biogHist>
In January 1890 responsibility for the Technological, Industrial, and Sanitary Museum, then known as the Technological Museum, was transferred to the Technical Education Branch of the Public Instruction Department. The Museum was located in a section of the Agricultural Hall, until 1893, when it moved to the purpose-built Sydney Technological Museum on Harris Street, Ultimo.

In April 1934, then-curator Arthur Penfold successfully proposed to the Technical Education Commission that the Museum become a separate entity. The following month, the Minister for Public Instruction announced that a new site wouldl be found for the Museum and its management would be transferred to a Trust.

The Museum of Technology and Applied Science Act, 1945 (Act No.31, 1945) provided for the constitution of a body corporate, known as the Trustees of the Museum of Technology and Applied Science.

The Museum was renamed the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) in 1950.
