The Museum was located in a section of the Agricultural Hall, until 1893, when it moved to the purpose-built Sydney Technological Museum on Harris Street, Ultimo. In April 1934, then-curator Arthur Penfold successfully proposed to the Technical Education Commission that the Museum become a separate entity. The following month, the Minister for Public Instruction announced that a new site wouldl be found for the Museum and its management would be transferred to a Trust. The Museum of Technology and Applied Science Act, 1945 (Act No.31, 1945) provided for the constitution of a body corporate, known as the Trustees of the Museum of Technology and Applied Science. The Museum was renamed the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) in 1950.
