The Cancer Institute, Melbourne was established in 1949 in a single room at the Queen Victoria Hospital, Melbourne. It was an outcome of the Cancer Institute Act 1948 (No. 5341), s4 passed by the Parliament of the State of Victoria. This followed active lobbying by Professor R.D. Wright and Peter MacCallum from 1943 for the establishment of a specialist cancer hospital. A body called the Cancer Institute Board was formed to manage the Cancer Institute which was established. In 1986 its name was formally changed to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute.
