Ernest Officer, having studied law and graduating with a Master of Arts at the University of Melbourne, returned in 1894 to manage the family property, 'Zara', near Wanganella in New South Wales. This was one of the leading sheep stations in the Riverina. After the property was sold in 1927, Officer moved to Melbourne. He and his sister Edith were keen students of Australian native flora. With Edith he contributed over 400 specimens to the National Herbarium of New South Wales in the early decades of the twentieth-century, many collected at 'Zara'. In 1928, Officer accompanied Michael Terry and two others on an expedition from Broome, travelling through Central Australia to Adelaide. Specimens collected on this trip are now in the National Herbarium of Victoria.
