The Farrer Memorial Trust was established in 1911 after a period of public fund-raising, with the intention of honouring the contributions to agriculture of William Farrer. He was renowned for his development of rust-resistant strains of wheat. Originally operating independently and based in Queanbeyan, New South Wales, the Trust now the Trust operates under the aegis of the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (formerly the Department of Agriculture). The Trust awards travelling and research scholarships, and, since 1936, the Farrer Memorial Medal recognising distinguished service to agricultural science in Australia in the fields of research, education or administration. Recipients also deliver the annual Farrer Memorial Oration.
