Barnard Clarkson held a number of public offices in Western Australia, particularly in his home town of Toodyay and as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. In 1864 he and Charles Harper explored in the Yilgarn district seeking suitable pastoral land with good soil and water resources. Plant specimens collected during this expedition were sent to Ferdinand Mueller, Victorian Government Botanist, and are now in the National Herbarium of Victoria.
