In his research he has focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of systematic botany, particularly on phylogenetic analysis. He has used these analyses to test theories of historical biogeography, co-evolution and adaptation, and to improve biological classification. For over 35 years Weston was a systematic botanist at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. Some of his major contributions include participation in a review of scientific research at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney and in tertiary teaching. He has been adjunct associate professor at several Australian universities and has taught at Rhodes University, South Africa.
