It was started by Max Moulds who saw the need for a magazine that published refereed, smaller, taxonomic and general biological papers on the insect fauna of Australia and nearby regions. Moulds was Editor for the first 15 volumes. In 1987 all matters relating to the editing, production and management of the journal were transferred to the Entomological Society of Queensland. It's coverage includes papers on the native insect, arachnid and myriapod faunas of Australia and islands in the southwest Pacific region east of Wallace's line.
