He was also an enthusiastic palaeontologist and fossil collector. Between 1981 and 1984 he assisted Peter Jell of Museum Victoria in collecting, recording and excavation of fossils from Middendorp's Quarry, Kinglake West, Victoria. From 1986 Holmes was a dedicated volunteer (and later Honorary Associate) in the Museum's Invertebrate Palaeontology section where he made significant contributions to the curation of the collections and other projects. He was particularly interested in fossil Echinoidea and published several papers on these. In 1979 he was a foundation member of the Fossil Collectors' Association of Australasia. For nearly 30 years he was editor of the Association's magazine The fossil collector, producing 82 issues.
