(It was briefly known as the Biosecurity Australia Award.) It recognises both individuals and community groups who have made a major contributions to protecting Australia's native plants and animals, ecosystems and people from dangerous new invasive species. Usually more than one Award is presented each year, in the categories of control and eradication; communication; community advocacy; policy and law; and surveillance. Walter Froggatt, Government Entomologist to the New South Wales Government for 27 years, was an outspoken and lone voice opposing the introduction to Australia of cane toads to control cane beetles.
