<abstract>James Syme was a distinguished radiologist who for over 30 years was on the staff of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, retiring in 1993 as Deputy Director of Radiology. For many years he was involved in teaching anatomy and radiodiagnosis, both at the University of Melbourne and in relation to the Diploma of the Australian Society for Ultrasound Medicine. Syme had a long association with the Royal Australasian College of Radiologists (and its predecessors) in executive roles including President in 1989 - 1990: he was a Life member from 1993. He represented the College at national and international functions.</abstract>
