He held the Diploma of the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine, of which Society he served a term as President. For over 20 years he worked in the public sector, including the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he was involved in setting up the breast screening clinic. This was followed by some years in private practice. In addition he was involved in the training of radiographers for many years. From 1962 to 1987 Ryan was Editor of Australian radiology, the research journal of the Royal Australasian College of Radiologists (and its predecessor, the College of Radiologists of Australasia). He played a leading role in the establishment of the College Archives.
