Bill Hanson was a highly-respected radiologist in South Australia and a prominent campaigner for the treatment of cancer. After completing his medical studies he joined the Adelaide Hospital where he was for nine years in the radiotherapy department. After serving with distinction during WWII, he returned to the Hospital, retiring in 1965as Senior Honorary Radiotherapist. Hanson was active in promoting establishment of radiological facilities in a number of Adelaide hospitals. He campaigned for the development of state-wide radiotherapy services, and from 1957 was a member of the South Australian Government's Radiological Advisory Committee. For many years Hanson was a key participant in the University of Adelaide Anti-Cancer Foundation including being Deputy Chairman from 1962 to 1980. In 1990 the University's Hanson Centre (later Institute) for Cancer Research was opened. Hanson was heavily involved in professional organisations, serving as President of the South Australian Branch of the British Medical Association, the Australian Cancer Society, and the College of Radiologists of Australasia.
