Much of his research has been directed to the theory and application of finite mixture models, particularly the expectation-maximisation (EM) algorithm. His methodological developments have application in many areas, including bioinformatics, biostatistics, flow cytometry, image analysis and survival analysis. He has published over 300 books and papers, some of which have become standard references. McLachlan joined the University of Queensland in 1974 and was appointed Professor of Statistics (a personal chair) in 1998.
