For most of his working life he was associated with the industry in Bundaberg, rising to managing director and chairman of Bundaberg Sugar Co. Ltd. He was also chairman of the Queensland Industry Development Corporation (QIDC), chairman of the University of Queensland Foundation, chairman of the Royal Brisbane Hospital Research Foundation and the Board of Governor for the University of Queensland, and vice-president of the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia, as well as serving on many other technical associations. In his positions as chairman and managing director of Bundaberg Sugar Company and chairman of the Sugar Research Ltd he was instrumental in fostering the careers of many young engineers in research and production engineering.
