It was responsible for administration of harbour navigation, safety and works, fishing, tourist, and commercial vessel regulation, and pollution. From 1931 to 1960, it was administered as a sub-department of Treasury, by an Administrative Board chaired by the Under Treasurer. From 1960 the department was headed by a Director, and consisted of divisions including Administration, Harbours Management, Works, and Marine Affairs. From 1969 it was established as a separate Department of State, in accordance with the Public Service Act. On 7 December 1989, the Department of Harbours and Marine was amalgamated with the Department of Main Roads and the Department of Transport (I) to form the new Department of Transport (II). The Maritime Division being responsible for management of ports, ship operations and marine infrastructure, sea transport development and maritime safety. Also on 7 December 1989, the Boating and Fisheries Patrol section of the Department of Harbours and Marine was amalgamated with the Department of Primary Industries.
