He was well respected as a man of great ability and broad scientific knowledge. Between 1890 and 1892 he started making steel on the Siemen's-Martin process in a plant that he had set up, but was unable to invest further in its development. In 1903, he moved into private practice, and after he contracted a lung disease, moved to a more rural environment. But his health never recovered.
