William Nimmo, CE AssocMInstCE AMIEE, civil and electrical engineer, was Assistant Electrical Engineer, City of Melbourne, 1893-1903, in charge of electric lighting. He was well respected as a man of great ability and broad scientific knowledge. Between 1890 and 1892 he started making steel on the Siemen's-Martin process in a plant that he had set up, but was unable to invest further in its development. In 1903, he moved into private practice, and after he contracted a lung disease, moved to a more rural environment. But his health never recovered.

His son, William Hogarth Robertson Nimmo was also a civil engineer, but possibly due to his father's decline, was unable to complete his electrical engineering and science degrees.
