In a note to the Air Member for Personnel (Air Commodore J E Hewitt) in 1945, the Director of Training (Group Captain P G Heffernan) suggesting that post-war planning should include an Air Force Cadet College based on the Army and Navy models at Duntroon and Flinders. His arguments were successful, and the RAAF College was established at Point Cook in 1947. It became the RAAF Academy in 1961 when it became associated with the University of Melbourne. The RAAF Academy closed in 1986 when all officer training for the Australian Defence Forces was conducted at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra.
