He retired from the position of Associate Professor in 1996. Jones had a leading role in the development of an innovative mathematics teaching program at La Trobe. His publications include Abstract algebra and famous impossibilities (1991) with Sid Morris and Ken Pearson, and several titles in the Australian Mathematical Society lecture series.
