His research ranged over hydrodynamic stability, singular perturbation theory, diffusion of heat and circulation in fluid flow. After undertaking research at the Aeronautical and Engine Research Test Laboratory (later Aeronautical Research Laboratories) in Melbourne, Pillow held several university positions before becoming Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Queensland in 1964.
