He is noted for founding the area of monotonic analysis and initiating new optimisation approaches to data mining. After periods of research in Russia, Azerbaijan and Israel, Rubinov migrated to Australia in 1996, becoming Professor of Mathematics at the University of Ballarat. Here he founded the Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO), which is widely recognised for theoretical and practical research in nonsmooth optimisation.
