With his extensive collaborations, including internationally, he has influenced many areas on mathematics and mathematical physics. For nearly 20 years Guttmann was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Melbourne. He was founding Director of both the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems (MASCOS).
