Barbara Wood was one of Australia's first female radiologists. After completing her medical studies at the University of Melbourne, she gained a Diploma in Medical Radiology and Electrology from the University of Cambridge in 1924. In 1925 she became the first full-time qualified radiologist appointed to an Australian hospital when she joined the Melbourne Hospital. She remained at the Hospital (later the Royal Melbourne Hospital) until retiring in 1958. Wood was noted for the meticulous manner in which she approached her work and the standards she expected of others. The excellence of her teaching was seen in the later careers of many of her students and the respect in which she was held by those students and her colleagues. Wood's published output was small and focused of Paget's disease. She was elected Honorary Fellow of the Australian Institute of Radiology.
