He is noted for his significant and long-term contributions to the teaching of mathematics to Australian secondary students through his association with the Australian Mathematics Trust (of which he was Executive Director from 1994 to 2012) and its predecessors, and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute. With colleague Peter O'Halloran, Taylor worked to engage students in mathematics by creating programs (in addition to the school curriculum) to develop skills in problem-solving, including the invention of algorithms and computer codes. He also played a role internationally in mathematics competitions.
