James Pink was a gardener and nurseryman who was active in Sydney in the 1870s before moving to Brisbane. There he worked at the Queensland Acclimatisation Society's garden at Bowen Park and the Brisbane Botanic Garden. Between 1881 and 1886, while Head Gardener at the Botanic Garden, he created vistas through the vegetation, paved the paths, and exercised the skill in bedding design for which he was well-known. After leaving the Garden he established an orchard and, in partnership with Alexander Cowan, established Badgers Nursery which specialised in fruit trees and roses. Pink published papers on lawn grasses, plant hybridisation and fruit culture.
