After working for a number of years in pharmaceutical research and development, she joined Monash University as a lecturer in chemical engineering. She was promoted to Professor of Chemical Engineering in 2014. Hapgood moved to Deakin University in 2017 to become Head of the School of Engineering. Since March 2022 Hapgood has been Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Swinburne University of Technology.
