Its functions include the provision of advice to government, industrial and educational organisations on matters relating to research and teaching in biochemistry and molecular biology; and the publication of Australian biochemist which is issued three time each year. The Society recognises excellence in the field by awarding a number of medals and prizes, including the Lemberg Medal and Oration and the Research Medal. In alternate years the Society co-ordinates the ComBio conference, the major biological sciences meeting in Australasia, which is run in conjunction with the New Zealand Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Australian and New Zealand Society for Cell and Developmental Biology, the Australian Society of Plant Scientists, and the Australasian RNA Biology and Biotechnology Association.
