The Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize has been presented since 2002 by the South Australian Museum. This now biennial award provides an opportunity for artists to investigate the world around them and present their perspectives on natural science. It encourages artists to make a statement about the scientific issues facing our planet, and offers a valuable platform for them to contribute to the environmental debate. Entries may be in any medium except photography, and must relate to the natural world and the sciences associated with it, such as biology, natural history, geology, astronomy, chemistry and physics. The Prize commemorates Frederick Waterhouse, the first Curator of the museum of the South Australian Institute, the predecessor of the South Australian Museum.
