<biogHist>
<abstract>William Cleland was a highly-respected medical practitioner in South Australia. After receiving his medical education in Europe and the United Kingdom, he was appointed to the Parkside Lunatic Asylum in Adelaide in 1878. He had charge there for 40 years, while also becoming Colonial Surgeon in 1896. Cleland lectured at the University of Adelaide from 1886 to 1911. He was active in local scientific societies, serving as President of the Royal Society of South Australia and the South Australian Branch of the British Medical Association.</abstract>
