Milton Spurling was a horticulturist with a distinguished career in horticultural research and extension, agricultural education and public administration. For over 20 years he worked for the Horticulture Branch South Australian Department of Agriculture, overseeing the development of facilities at Loxton, Lenswood and Northfield, and being largely responsible for the high reputation of the Branch's research program in horticulture and viticulture. His research ranged over frost control, vegetable and citrus production, fruit drying, and tree crop irrigation. He played a significant role in the development of packaging and post-harvest treatments of oranges. In 1972 Spurling became Senior Lecturer in Plant Science (and ultimately Deputy Principal) at Roseworthy Agricultural College. He made a major contribution to agricultural education in South Australia, including in Aboriginal communities. Internationally he was involved with education programs for the FAO and the Colombo Plan. Spurling was actively involved in orienteering and scouting: in 1979 he was awarded the Medal of Merit by Scouts Australia.
