He was Professor of Physics at the University of Sydney from 2006 to 2015 before becoming Director of the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Toronto. Gaensler was appointed the inaugural Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence in All-sky Astrophysics in 2011. Other international projects in which Gaensler has been involved include the Square Kilometre Array and the Murchison Widefield Array Consortium.
