<biogHist>
The Queensland Medical Society, in its third incarnation, was established in 1886 with Joseph Bancroft as its inaugural President. It was preceded in 1871 by a Society of the same name in northern Queensland, but this organisation existed for only one year. In 1882 the second Society of this name was established, but lasted only a few years. Its major preoccupation was with medical ethics, giving rise to the Ethico-Medical Society which functioned from 1890 to 1893. The third Queensland Medical Society started in 1886. It had an uncomfortable association with the rival organisation, the Queensland Branch of the British Medical Association (established 1894). The Society ultimately voted itself out of existence and transferred its assets to its rival.
