Bob Fisher, a pharmacist by profession, was noted as an expert on Australian butterflies. He reared many South Australian species, making detailed studies of their life histories. His collections were made throughout Australia and New Guinea, and elsewhere, usually accompanied by high-quality photographs. For over 20 years Fisher was Honorary Research Associate at the South Australian Museum, during which time he reorganised the butterfly holdings and incorporated his own collection. His publications included papers and articles, reports for government on the butterfly fauna of conservation areas, and the books <span style="font-style:italic">Butterflies of South Australia</span> (1978) and <span style="font-style:italic">A field guide to Australian butterflies</span> (1993). Between 1964 and 1987 he collected over 300 specimens of plants associated with butterfly larvae, often in association with Ronald Southcott and John Womersley. These are now in the State Herbarium of South Australia. Fisher was a long term member (and later Patron) of Butterfly Conservation SA.
