Its business was to operate inner city horse-drawn omnibus services. In 1883 the Company was contracted by the Melbourne Tramway Trust, the authorising and construction authority, to operate the cable tram network under license to 1916. Under the lease the Company was responsible for the rolling stock and ancillary facilities, and maintenance. On the expiry of the lease the Company ceased to function as a passenger carrier.
