James Ramsay was a pastoralist and naturalist who shared his interest in natural history with other members of his family, particularly his brother Edward Ramsay who was a curator at the Australian Museum, Sydney. James spent most of his life working on New South Wales pastoral properties, including those owned by family members, and often managing them. He was a keen collector of zoological specimens, especially of birds and their eggs and reptiles. His herpetological specimens were deposited in the Museum and are valuable as being among the earliest collected from western New South Wales.
