In 1964 he became Lecturer in mycology at the University of Western Australia, retiring in 1987 as Senior Lecturer. During this time he was curator of the University's mycological herbarium: after his retirement these 3,000 voucher specimens were transferred to the Western Australian Herbarium. Hilton was known as an inspiring teacher. His research was wide-ranging and often involved extensive correspondence with mycologists in Australia and all over the world.
