He joined the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology in Queensland in 1965, retiring in 2008 as Head of the Severe Weather Section. For the next eight years he was a consultant conducting research on tropical cyclones and other severe weather, including thunderstorms, coastal damage and extreme flooding events. In 2016 Callaghan was awarded the Gibbs medal from the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society for his significant long-term contributions to operational forecasting services.
