Alan Jones is a zoologist whose research centres on marine invertebrates. His studies have included work on Moreton Bay, the Hawkesbury River estuary and macrobenthic sedimentary assemblages. Some of his work has informed the proceedings of government agencies responsible for catchments and management of environmental flows. More recently he has concentrated on the ecology and fauna of sandy beaches, habitat which is under pressure and little studied, and particularly amphipods. Since 1975 Jones has been a marine ecologist with the Australian Museum, where he is a Senior Fellow. He became an Honorary Life Member of the Australian Marine Sciences Association in 2006.
