Nev Walters was a mycologist whose expertise was in wood-decaying fungi and timber preservation. After working as a solicitor for several years and serving with the British Army during WWII, he graduated with a BSc in 1950 and joined the CSIRO Division of Forest Products. His research included work on the natural durability of timber. He was particularly interested in <span style="font-style:italic">Serpula lacrymans</span>, a species exotic to Australia which attacked the poorly-ventilated underfloor of buildings. Walters was responsible for the establishment of an internationally significant collection of specimens and cultures of wood-inhabiting and wood destroying fungi. In 1999, to ensure the preservation of these collections, over 5,000 specimens (representing more than 830 species) were transferred to the National Herbarium of Victoria; the culture collection (approximately 2,100 cultures) was transferred to Ensis, a joint venture between the CSIRO Division of Building Research and Forest Research Australasia Ltd. Walters retired from CSIRO in 1977.
