Hal Cogger is recognised as one of Australia's most eminent herpetologists. He joined the Australian Museum in 1952 as a cadet preparator, being Curator of reptiles and amphibians from 1962 to 1977 and ultimately Deputy Director until his retirement in 1995. His research centres on the reptiles and amphibians of the Australian and Pacific regions, particularly their ecology, systematics and biogeography. Cogger's extensive publications include descriptions of many new species, reports on the status of marine reptiles and frogs in Australia and its off-shore islands, and the definitive text <span style="font-style:italic">Reptiles and amphibians of Australia</span> (1975, 7th edition 2014). A foundation member of the Australian Society of Herpetologists, Cogger was President from 1971 to 1973. The genus <span style="font-style:italic">Coggeria</span> was named in his honour, based on a skink endemic to Fraser Island.
