He joined the Great Barrier Reef Expedition in 1928 as the representative of the University of Queensland. Several of his papers were published in the Scientific reports of the Expedition. In the early 1930's Moorhouse worked for the Great Barrier Reef Committee and the Queensland Government investigating the commercial potential of sponges, beche de mer and Trochus shells. His attempts to create his own business in this area was brought to a halt by a cyclone. During this period he made notable films of the Reef and the people living there.
