Alan Weatherley was a limnologist whose research ranged from investigating the potential for fish farming in Tasmania (which involved studying plankton blooms, benthic fauna and water chemistry in lakes and farm ponds), to zinc pollution running into Molonglo River near Canberra. His main research focused of fish growth: in 1972 he published the award-winning <span style="font-style:italic">Growth and ecology of fish populations</span>. Weatherley was a foundation member of the Australian Society for Limnology and while President conceived the project of producing a pioneering work on Australian limnology. The book <span style="font-style:italic">Australian inland waters and their fauna: eleven studies</span> was published in 1967 under his editorship. He was also the first Editor of the Society's <span style="font-style:italic">Newsletter</span>. Weatherley left Australia in 1973 and held professorial positions at the Universities of Tromsø, Norway, and Toronto, Canada.
