His main research focused of fish growth: in 1972 he published the award-winning Growth and ecology of fish populations. Weatherley was a foundation member of the Australian Society for Limnology and while President conceived the project of producing a pioneering work on Australian limnology. The book Australian inland waters and their fauna: eleven studies was published in 1967 under his editorship. He was also the first Editor of the Society's Newsletter.
