He made significant contributions to the study of crustacean physiology and was a pioneer and leading authority in the taxonomy of prawns in the family Penaeidae. When he began his investigations very little was known of the Australian species. His research extended to the evolution and zoogeography of the whole family. In 1975 Dall was appointed Officer-in-Charge of CSIRO's new Cleveland Marine Laboratories. He instigated a research program which earned widespread recognition and underpinned the scientific and sustainable management of prawn fisheries in northern Australia. In retirement, as Honorary Research Fellow at the Queensland Museum, Dall returned to his study of the taxonomy of Australian prawns, including in the families Solenoceridae, Aristeidae and Sicyonidae.
