John Lake as an ichthyologist who studied the freshwater fish of Australia. Early work was on trout species in New South Wales fish, and on the distribution of exotic freshwater species in relation to thermal tolerances, reproductive sites and other environmental factors. On becoming Director of Fisheries Research in Narrandera, Lake established a series of experimental ponds to research the conditions which induced spawning in Murray cod, golden perch and other species. He later held positions at the Universities of Sydney and Northern New South Wales (Lismore), and the Northern Territory Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife Department. His publications include <span style="font-style:italic">Freshwater fishes and rivers of Australia</span> (1971) and <span style="font-style:italic">Australian freshwater fishes illustrated: an illustrated field guide</span> (1978). Lake was President of the Australian Society for Limnology from 1963 to 1964.
