It is usually awarded annually, the recipient giving the Hilary Jolly Memorial Lecture at the Society's conference in the year after that in which the award was made. The Society's successor, the Australian Freshwater Sciences Society, has continued to present the Medal. Between 2004 and 2018 the Medal was known as the ASL Medal.
