He qualified in the United Kingdom, becoming a Fellow of the College of Optometrists. After a short period in private practice, he was appointed Lecturer in optometry at the Queensland Institute (later University) of Technology in 1970. He retired as Associate Professor in 2006. During this period he held numerous visiting teaching appointments in overseas universities and was heavily involved in continuing professional education. Swann published nearly 100 papers, most of them being clinical case reports. His contributions were recognised with a number awards for teaching excellence.
