He started his career with the Bureau of Mineral Resources, where he worked on the development of airborne survey systems. He converted wartime AN/ASQ-1 Magnetic Airborne Submarine Detectors to airborne magnetometer survey tools: these were used in Australia's first airborne magnetic surveys. During a brief period with the North Australian Uranium Corporation he discovered uranium at Coronation Hill, Northern Territory. Newman joined Barringer Research (Canada) in 1963, being involved with Barringer's participation in Australian Mining Exploration Geophysics (AMEG), the first Australian-owned airborne geophysical exploration company. He later became sole owner of AMEG which operated from 1965 to 1974. On leaving Barringer in 1976 Newman established, with colleagues, the consulting firm Interex Geophysics which operated in the Toronto area.
